Background

The Grain SA Awards is a platform Grain SA established to give recognition of excellence in the production of grain across the South Africa’s grain farming community, ranging from farming on a couple of hectares to production of hundreds of tons of grain.

The Grain Producer of the Year award replaced the former Maize Man of the Year award since 2000, with the inclusion of all grains. Following the success of this accolade, Grain SA opted to recognise the achievements of developing producers as well, and in 2002 introduced the category Developing Grain Producer of the Year, affiliated with the Grain SA Farmer Development Programme, which is aimed at developing sustainable black commercial farmers.

This prestigious event is widely regarded as the event of the year in the agricultural industry, affording Grain SA and its partners the opportunity to showcase the role we and South Africa’s producers play to ensure food security for South Africa.

The Grain SA awards are presented over two events, the Day of Celebration and Grain SA Gala Awards evening held annually in the Free State and Gauteng during September and October and attended by over 300 and 400 guests respectively.

Format

The Gala Awards evening is held in Gauteng and is attended by over 400 guests and bring together grain producers, executives, national and provincial government representatives, agricultural mentors and peers, corporate agriculture managers, policy makers and the media, and offers a wonderful opportunity to engage and network with industry peers and enjoy the award celebrations.
