Why It Matters

Agricultural productivity in the Eastern Cape is constrained by limited data on crop performance under local conditions. This project addresses that gap by evaluating the adaptability and yield potential of key grain and oilseed crops, such as maize, wheat, canola, sorghum, soybean, and sunflower, across diverse agroecological zones. Reliable, site-specific data on cultivar performance, disease resistance, and grain quality will empower farmers to make informed decisions, improve crop yields, and enhance food security. The initiative also supports student training and capacity-building, contributing to the development of future agricultural scientists.

Research Approach

The project is structured into two main work packages: Cultivar Evaluation and Tillage & Cropping System Effects. Multi-location field trials are conducted to assess crop performance under dryland and irrigated conditions. Cultivar trials are established at three sites, while tillage trials near Alice evaluate conventional vs. no-till systems. Data on grain yield, quality, and system efficiency are collected and analyzed. Collaborations with universities and research councils ensure rigorous scientific methodology, while student involvement fosters academic growth and practical experience.

Research Impact to Farmers

Eastern Cape farmers will benefit from independent, evidence-based recommendations on crop selection and management practices tailored to local conditions. The trials provide critical insights into cultivar adaptability, yield stability, and agronomic efficiency. This empowers producers to optimize inputs, reduce risks, and improve profitability. Additionally, the project promotes conservation agriculture and sustainable practices, helping farmers transition toward resilient farming systems. The dissemination of findings through reports, demonstrations, and student-led outreach ensures that knowledge reaches both commercial and emerging farmers.
