Why it matters

Herbicide-resistant weeds are becoming a major challenge in the Western Cape, especially for farmers practising conservation agriculture. Overreliance on herbicides is no longer sustainable, and alternative weed control methods are urgently needed. One such approach, Harvest Weed Seed Control (HWSC), targets weeds at harvest before their seeds return to the soil. HWSC is already widely used in Australia but has not yet been tested under South African conditions. This project investigates whether HWSC can be a practical, cost-effective solution for local farmers to reduce weed pressure and protect long-term crop productivity.

Research approach

The project tests several HWSC methods such as tram lining and narrow windrow burning, across three different conservation cropping systems at Langgewens Research Farm over three seasons (2025–2027). The team will monitor weed types, seedbank densities and how many weed seeds are captured at harvest. Trials will include systems with and without herbicide use to evaluate how HWSC performs in both scenarios. Data will be collected on weed emergence, harvest losses, and economic feasibility. The aim is to compare HWSC methods and identify which are best suited for local conditions.

Research impact to farmers

This research will help producers manage herbicide-resistant weeds more effectively. By identifying HWSC methods that work in local systems, this project offers practical ways to reduce future weed problems and dependence on herbicides. Producers will gain insights into which HWSC techniques are cost-effective, easy to implement, and most effective against common problem weeds like ryegrass. These insights will support smarter, more resilient weed management practices tailored to the realities of local farming.
