Why conservation agriculture matters
Conventional plough-based farming in South Africa has led to severe soil degradation, high erosion rates, and declining profitability, especially in rural areas. Current tillage practices remove crop cover and weaken soil health, leaving farmland vulnerable to climate extremes and reduced productivity.
Conservation Agriculture (CA) offers a proven alternative that protects soils, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances resilience to drought while sustaining food production. With the country’s average soil loss far exceeding natural soil formation rates, adopting CA is critical to secure long-term food security, farmer livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
Research approach
CA is built on three key principles: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and crop diversification. The Farmer Innovation Programme (FIP) recognises farmers not only as adopters but also as innovators and knowledge generators. The approach emphasises on-farm innovation, discovery learning, and farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange through study groups, clubs, and networks. Complemented by practices like integrated pest and nutrient management, CA strengthens soil health and promotes biodiversity. The programme integrates research, farmer experience, and facilitation to develop locally adapted CA systems, while also building awareness, education, and market-based incentives that encourage large-scale uptake across diverse farming contexts.

Research impact to farmers
Adoption of CA empowers farmers with more resilient and profitable farming systems. By reducing erosion, improving water availability, and increasing soil fertility, CA lowers input costs and stabilises yields even under drought conditions. Farmers benefit from healthier soils that support sustainable production, while reduced labour and energy demands cut production costs. Beyond individual gains, CA fosters collective innovation through farmer platforms, enabling wider community adoption. Globally, CA has transformed agriculture in countries such as Brazil and Argentina, and in South Africa, its growing use is helping smallholders and commercial farmers alike to transition towards climate-smart, sustainable farming systems.
